Family life became strings by urbanization as families became isolated from their extended family. Rate of divorce increased to one and 12 marriages by 1900. Another effect of urbanization was the reduction of family size as children went from being an economic asset to being a liability. As a result, the national average birth rate and family size dropped during the last decades of the 19th century.
