There were Indian War conflicts in the late 19th century between settlers and the native groups. The US tried to isolate the Native American groups but tension rose after gold was found in their land. The Indian Appropriation Act of 1871 was made so that tribes of natives were not independent nations. The majority of the bison population was slaughtered so they could not leave the land.
