jan 1, 1901 - Platt Amendment
Description:
The Platt Amendment was an amendment to an army Appropriations bill that was one of the conditions of the withdrawal of US troops from Cuba. It required that Cuba agree to never sign treaties with foreign powers that affected its independence as a separate nation as well as allow the United States to interfere in Cuban affairs that would preserve Independence and Law and Order. It would also allow the United States to establish Naval bases in Cuba such as the permanent Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay. The amendment put Cuba under U.S. control in terms of foreign policy and affairs for many years to come.
