While it has not been an American territory, American missionaries and entrepreneurs have been settling on the island of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean since the mid-nineteenth century. Influenced by imperialist sentiments, expansionists seeked to take Hawaiian territory for the United States. In 1893, American settlers overthrew the Hawaiian monarch, Queen Liliuokalani, even though President Cleveland was against imperialism and went against Republican attempts to Annex Hawaii for the United States. After war broke out in the Philippines, however, President McKinley had precedent to approve the annexation of Hawaii in 1898, making the Hawaiian Islands a territory of the United States in 1900.
