jan 1, 1765 - Stamp Act
Description:
Once again, as a result of lacking funds for their own needs, Britain turned to the Colonies to impose more taxes. This time, it was a tax that had already been present in the Motherland, the Stamp Act. This Act essentially taxed all things paper through the mandating of a revenue stamp on most of these paper-goods. Everyday items like newspapers, ads, and pamphlets all costed more. Another notable feature of this ta was that it was the first one that was considered “direct.” What that means is that it was covered by the citizens of the colonies rather than the merchants. This also meant that more people were affected by the new tax. Consequentially, this fanned the flames in the colonies, resulting in an angered response from the colonists.
