dec 31, 1894 - Depression Politics: Jobless on the March: Coxey’s Army (WXT, POL, SOC)
Description:
With the depression getting worse and laborers becoming frustrated, many conservatives began fearing a class war, given no resolve to the economic situation being brought forth. Populist party members and unemployed Americans rallied together, jobless on the march, under the leadership of Populist Party leader Jacob A. Coxey, known as the Coxey’s Army. Coxey demanded the federal government to spend an immense amount of money (500 million dollars) on public programs that would aid in creating jobs and aid the living condition of the jobless. However, Coxey’s army was dissolved as Coxey along with other leaders protesting the federal government were arrested. This march was what made many conservatives fear the prospect of a class war.
