aug 14, 1890 - Changes in Education: Public Schools (SOC, WXT)

Description:

Elementary schools nearing the end of the 19th century tended to teach writing, arithmetic, and reading, which were promoted by books by McGuffey, from the educational reforms. With new educational laws, children were demanded to attend school which increased the number of children who presented themselves to school. As a result of public schools, the literacy rates in America rose to 90 percent. Seeing the amazing effects education had on the people of the United States, many Americans began admiring the idea of early childhood education and sending their children to kindergarten. With the growing support for education, tax-paid public highschools became more comprehensive and more present in the United States. Along with highschools, citizenship and vocational schools were built in order to improve urban society.
