Walter Rauschenbusch, leader of the Social Gospel movement, emphasized the importance of applying Christian values and faith to social problems. His Social Gospel would play a pivotal role in the Progressive reform movement and would invoke many middle-class protestants to attack the systematic corruption that caused problems in urban centers.
