jan 1, 1808 - End of International Slave Trade

Description:

Although the ending of the international slave trade did not end slavery in the U.S., in a limited way, it offered an improvement for African Americans because plantation owners were force to rely on natural reproduction to increase their labor supply. As a result, they needed to make sure slaves lived longer and were healthier, and so they were forced to provide slaves with better food, shelter and clothing. Some slaves gained leverage to fish or hunt or maintain a small garden to grow their own vegetables. However, slavery was still brutal for African Americans.
