apr 1, 1823 - Second Great Awakening: Burned over District

Description:

In 1823, minister Charles G. Finney started a series of revivals in upstate New York. Instead of delivering sermons based on rational argument, Finney appealed to people's emotions and fears of damnation. He preached that everyone could be saved through faith and hard work. Because of his great influence, Western New York became known as the “burnt-over district”.
