feb 18, 1819 - New Questions and Issues

Description:

In contrast to the other parts of the country, the new states of the West had a small population. In order to maximize their political influence in Congress, Western leaders worked with politicians from other branches to accomplish their aims. For western states, the most important goals included: 1) inexpensive capital from state banks rather than from the Bank of the United States, 2) low rates for federally sold land, and 3) better transport. Westerners, however, could not come to an understanding to allow or eradicate slavery. For economic purposes, those living in the south chose slavery, while those living in the north had little need for slavery. When the Missouri Territory appealed to Congress for statehood, slavery became a matter of discussion.
