feb 16, 1958 - Fidel Castro becomes leader of Cuba

Description:

On February 16 1959, Fidel Castro became the prime minister of Cuba and forced the current dictator, Fulgencio Batista, into exile. Castro converted the Cuban government into a socialist-communist party. Fidel Castro becoming the prime minister of Cuba played a part in the beginning of the Cold War because Castro sided with the Soviet Union and allowed nuclear weapons to be placed in Cuba, which resulted in the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. The Cuban Missile Crisis increased tension between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.
