A spin off of the popular video game, the show was a resounding success in Japan, and executives at Nintendo were keen to repeat that success in the US. (Chua-Eoan & Larimer, 1999). While previous Japanese anime such as Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion had enjoyed moderate popularity in the US ("History of Anime in the US", 2021), Pokémon was the show that kicked off the explosion of popularity for anime in the West, which continues to this day.
