jan 16, 1961 - East Germany erects Berlin Wall
Description:
Throughout 1961, citizens of East Germany were fleeing from the Soviet state into the western owned German states. This embarrassed East Germany and damaged its economy. To combat this, a barrier was erected separating East Germany and East Berlin from the west. This wall halted the flow of refugees into West Germany and prevented western ideas flowing to the east.
