mar 23, 1983 - Strategic Defense Initiative

Description:

The Strategic Defense Initiative, abbreviated SDI (also nicknamed the "Star Wars program"), was a US-proposed strategic defensive system to prevent potential nuclear attacks from the Soviet Union. The proposal was made due to the speculations of attacks that could be made by the Soviets with their intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). The defensive system proposed that the system would intercept the ICBMs mid-flight. The proposal received mixed thoughts, as those who sided with the proposal thought that the defense system would be effective and crucial to deter potential attacks. Those who opposed of it thought that the system would further the arms race. The works of the system would persist until the eventual collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
The SDI was significant in the war because it gave an advantage to the US against the Soviet Union as it was a posed technological-challenge to the Soviets in which they could not handle.
