oct 4, 1957 - Sputnik launch
Description:
On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched the first artificial satellite, Sputnik-1, into orbit. This dubbed the start of the "Space Age" and the "space race" against the US. Sputnik-1 would bring fear to the US as it gave way for speculation that the Soviet's knowledge about space was far beyond that of the US.
The launch of Sputnik-1 was significant as it started the space race between the Soviet Union and the US as well as building up more tension upon the US in the arms race as the launch fueled the arms race.
