feb 16, 1959 - Fidel Castro becomes leader of Cuba
Description:
Many Cuban groups started to develop the opposition of Barista, and so in December the 16th of July forces under Che Guevara would attack at Santa Clara, shattering Batista's forces. As a result, Batista fled to the Dominican Republic, and Fidel Castro, along with his men, took over the Cuban government, later being sworn as prime minister on February 16.
Fidel's sworn into Prime Minister of Cuba was significant to the war as it establishes the first Marxist government of the western hemisphere. As a result, Castro had developed relations with the Soviet Union and had allowed them to store missiles in Cuba, leading to the Cuban Missile Crisis.
