jan 1, 1854 - Ostend Manifesto:

Description:

In an attempt to take the island by force of arms, some Southern explorers led small expeditions to Cuba. However those forays were quickly defeated by Spanish firing squads and executed. The newly elected president, Franklin Pierce, adopted pro-Southern policies and sent three American diplomats to Ostend, where they secretly attempted to purchase Cuba from Spain. The scheme was abandoned following an ugly reaction from anti-slavery members of Congress.
