The topic of temperance which was once visited during the second great awakening became popular again during the period of progressive movements. Alcohol became a reliable source for so many that faced economic challenges during the panic or just political tensions. Progressives tried to shut down saloons, but many politicians did not allow that. Many progressives even tried to ban sale of alcoholic beverages, and gain success when proposing this idea to legislature.
