Launched
Description:
The Soviet Union became the first state to send a satellite into space. The satellite circled the globe a few times before burning up, but scientists all over the world kept their eyes on the satellite.
Significance: This early victory in the Space Race led to a streak of first for the Soviet Union, ending only when Americans were the first to land on the moon.
