The Tonkin Gulf incident occurred on August 2, 1964, which was a conflict where North Vietnamese gunboats opened fire on U.S Warships in the Gulf of Tonkin. This incident allowed President Johnson to take a more hands-on approach of the Vietnam War, he gained congressional authority to send in U.S forces into combat in Vietnam. Congress approved, which allowed the Commander in Chief to use “all necessary measures” to defend U.S interests in Vietnam. The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was important because it essential led to the U.S engaging more in the Vietnam War. Also, it gave the President a power to sign blank checks to protect the U.S.
