jun 1, 2000 - CLS creates the Summer Language Institute
Description:
BYU students and visiting students from across the country can take intensive summer language courses and learn a full year’s worth (two semesters) of a language in only two months. The summer program specializes in less commonly taught languages and primarily serves returned missionaries who want to refresh or improve their mission language skills.
Returned missionaries who don’t continue to formally study the languages they learned while serving lose them very quickly. Mel Luthy: “But if they come off their missions and spend just one semester of formal study, it is amazing what that does for their language retention and expansion.”
CLS Summer program enrollment: 175
Returned missionary courses: 16
Students are given the chance to live in FLSR housing.
