Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated by James Earl Ray in 1968 while standing oustide on the balcony of his motel room in Memphis, Tennessee. The period of national mourning following the assassination helped speed up the passing of the Fair Housing Act, which prohibited discrimination involving the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, religion, national origin, and sex; the act is widely considered the last great legislative achievement of the civil rights era.Added to timeline:
