Emmett Till was a 14 year old black boy who was lynched in Mississippi after he allegedly flirted with a white woman while visiting a country store. His mother decided to have an open-casket funeral to expose the effects of racism, and after the story went viral, the murderers were put on trial, but they were acquitted by an all-white jury. The murder of Emmitt Till highlighted the brutality of the Jim Crow South.
