Description:
Two Confederate warships being constructed in the shipyard of Laird and Sons in Great Britain. They were designed to destroy the wooden ships of the Union navy with large iron rams and large-caliber guns. Charles Francis Adams convinced the British that they might be creating enemies that would backfire in the future. The Royal Navy bought the ships to avoid conflict.Added to timeline:
