A Union warship cruising near Cuba stopped a British steamer, The Trent, and forcibly removed two Confederate diplomats bound for Europe. Britain was furious and troops departed for Canada. Lincoln reluctantly released the prisoners because it made no sense to try and fight two wars at once.
