feb 21, 1543 - 1543- Nicolaus Copernicus say the sun is the center of the universe

Description:

Copernicus is responsible for creating the Heliocentric Theory, or view of the universe. Copernicus’ theory said that the Sun, not the Earth was the center of the universe, and that all planets revolve around the Sun. This was a dangerous theory at the time as it went against the beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church. The Church said that the Earth was the center of the universe, as it would be a literal representation of how God puts humans first, proving that God is all good and powerful. Going against the Church was a very dangerous thing to do at the time, because in the 1540s, the Church had all the power, as people feared going against the Church and ending up in hell. Copernicus waited until his death to publish his theory, as to avoid punishment from the Church. This was significant as it showed that the Church could be wrong and lead to more people feeling that they could question things the Church claimed to be true. In addition to this, the realization of the Heliocentric Universe was at a time of many scientific discoveries, and this time lead to a change in viewpoint for mankind and an increase in knowledge that lasted for hundreds of years. The picture shows a diagram of what the heliocentric theory of our universe looks like.
