The South and midwest felt most threatened my the secular aspects of modern life and as fundamentalism spread through this region, fundamentalist protestants increasingly fought the the theory of evolution by Charles Darwin. In Tennessee fundamentalist protestant William Jennings bryan prosecuted a teacher for teaching evolution in school. Criminal lawyer Clarence Darrow defended him. Scopes was found guilty, but conviction overturned on appeal. The significance of this trial is that it highlights the cultural division over the place of religion in American Society which still persists to this day.
