jan 1, 1869 - Knights of Labor

Description:

A growing number of working people during the Industrial Revolution failed to see the relationship between employer and employee as mutually beneficial, and considered labor unions to be the best vehicle for communication and negotiation. The Knights of Labor aimed to unite all workers in one national union and challenge the power of corporate capitalists. They didn't see immediate success until Terence V. Powderly advocated for an 8 hour workday, abolition of child labor, and women as members. About 10% of the industrial workforce was a member.
