Description:
Mormons sought religious freedom in Utah and established the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. In the 1870s, the government tried to control Mormon practices. Reynolds v. United States determined that a polygamist could be convicted as a criminal. After abandoning polygamy, the Mormons were able to acieve statehood in Utah in 1896.
