About 1500 and above Canadians participated in the Spanish Civil War. Among these volunteers almost all of them were impoverished working class immigrants. Only 32 had higher education. While the American and the British compatriots were among intellectuals, writers and artists and were in their mid twenties while Canadians were in their mid thirties. When the war officially ended. Only 35 Canadians were able to make it back to France. The rest were either too wounded or were still in their camps. It has been around 80 years now since the war but the heat and fire still remains of the struggle. The soldiers who survived nor the Canadians who died did not receive any appreciation for their sacrifice. There can be few monuments found in Canada that give glimpses to their story.
