Fantasias are instrumental compositions whose form and style are unique to each composer. However, by the 19th century, fantasias had developed a more rigid form. Most fantasias written in this period were operatic fantasias, characterized by a freer introduction and an extended final section. The term fantasia was also used to describe virtuosic compositions with popular sources, such as folk tunes. Fantaisie in F Major is an operatic fantasia that has folk dance music characteristics, as did many of Szymanowska’s works.
In this piece, Szymanowska introduces a theme and builds upon it throughout the piece. The Allegro moderato section contains an example of an earlier theme reintroduced in a polka style with dance-like movement.
The repeated accompaniment patterns in the left hand give Fantaisie in F Major structure while supporting the floating gestures of the right hand, helping to create balanced parts. The stability that comes with this balance highlights the variation in tempo and articulation between sections.
