jan 1, 1852 - Sextet for Winds and Piano in C Minor, Op. 40

Description:

Recording: https://stolaf.naxosmusiclibrary.com/catalogue/item.asp?cid=SWR10415

Composer: Louise Farrenc
Genre: Sextet

Mvt. 1 (Allegro):
While in sonata form, it does not entirely stick to the typical form. Unlike most classical A themes, Farrenc’s is spacious and chromatic.
Also, the exposition begins in C minor, but the recapitulation gradually moves to C major, which the coda continues in, rather than c minor.

Mvt. 2 (Andante Sostenuto):
The form is much similar to an 18th century sonata form than to the 19th century sonata form (there's a theme and reappearance of that theme without a development). She plays a lot with differing instrumentations and what that does to the presentation and evolution of the theme in this movement.

Mvt. 3 (Allegro vivace):
Ends with a period-typical fast and exciting movement.
