The Homestead Act was passed on May 20, 1862 opening public land for settlement. To claim land of their own, Americans had to meet a certain set of conditions such as being 21 year old and build a home. The Homestead Act helped Westward Expansion and was extremely beneficial for white settlers but very bad for the natives.
