In 43 AD, almost 100 years later. Emperor Claudius leads invasion
- 4 legions arrived, almost 40000 troops. Large numbers to make sure Cesar’s defeat was not repeated.
- Many Celtic people were living in Britain, but were not organised enough.
- Claudius not only had a great force, but also had a great strategy: Carrot and the stick.
- 40000 troops landed in Kent and spread throughout the isles. Romans would seize oppida (towns) and places of worship.
o Celtic chieftains who decided against taking up arms against this massive force, for those people Claudius had a different plan. If they decided to not fight their forces, the chieftains sons were taken to Rome. (Treated incredibly well in their warm climate, Roman villa’s). As a consequence of that, resistance watered down.

- Claudius was determined to get it right. Was an unlikely candidate, had a ‘platfvoet’.
- He faced opposition from the Senate.
- Roman culture valued military achievement
- Conquest of Britain was very profitable, so Britain was to be invaded.
