Parliament passed the Sugar Act on April 5, 1764. The real name of the Sugar Act is the American Revenue Act of 1764. British legislation was aiming at ending the smuggling trade in sugar and molasses from the French and Dutch West Indies and at providing added revenues to fund enlarged British Empire responsibilities following the French and Indian War.
