Description:
An American U-2 spy plane was flying over the land of the Soviet Union. The Soviets shot it down because it was so far into their territory. The pilot, Francis Gary Powers, was shot down but survived the crash and later was captured by the Soviet forces. The US claimed that it was there to gather information about the weather, but the Soviets got Powers to admit that it was a spy plane gathering information.Added to timeline:
