oct 1, 1935 - Mussolini Attacks Ethiopia

Description:

Mussolini attacked Ethiopia in order to establish a stronger Italian nation, and boost the countries status. The League of Nations were willing to allow him to gain substance of the conquest if independant Ethiopia remain, however he decided to just conquer Ethiopia and have it be a part of Italy. The League of Nations did put trade embargos on Italy, but it ended up not putting any on oil, the most important resource contributing to the conquest. Britain allowed Italy to use the Suez Canal to reach Ethiopia, causing further distrust on the League of Nations and its defense systems. The alienation of Italy afterwards led to Mussolini turning to Germany. The conquest led to Hitler's recognition and respect of Italy, further leading to the new alliance between the nations with the formation of the Rome-Berlin Axis in 1936.
