mar 1, 1957 - Potato Boycott

Description:

Explanation
The ANC agreed to hold this boycott in 1957 at its annual conference
Many Black South Africans would thus not buy any potatoes from vendors

Causes
The Ministry of Justice had been using unemployed African workers and those convicted of petty crimes to work on farms.
Farmers paid authorities 4.5 pence a day for the use of this labour and gave workers nothing but basic needs, even being locked in at night in their poor accommodation.
Workers had no tools so dug up the potatoes with their bare hands.

Consequences
The boycott meant that potatoes would go rotten and so even white people refused to buy them.
In 1959 farmers started improving conditions for workers.
