For eight years, Snow Flower and Lily hadn't spoken a word to each other. One day Spring Moon visits Lady Lu's house and begs her to come visit her mother, Snow Flower was very sick. By the time Lily came, it was evident that her laotong was nearing the end of her life as the tumor in her belly had grown to a size of a baby. Lily never left Snow Flower's side, took care of her, brought the best doctors but in the end, Snow Flower died. A burial was held, where all of Snow Flower's writing was burned so she would have it with her in the afterworld. Snow Flower's sworn sisters reveal to Lily that Snow Flower wasn't their sworn sister after all, Lily had read her letter wrong. It was also revealed that everything Snow Flower did was to please Lily, she had more sex so there were more chances of conceiving the son that Lily always urged her to do and even after she had followed her laotong's orders, Lily was never pleased, Lily didn't show her laotong sympathy when she needed it, Lily only spoke the words and rules of a man to Snow Flower. Lily also realizes the tumor had began to grow in her laotong's belly from as early on as their days on the mountains. Lily failed in her duties as a laotong, she would regret her decisions and words for the rest of her life.
