In the mid-Euphrates, northeastern Syria, the clay tablet RS 34.152, dating from ∼1190 BCE and originating from the city of Emar, is evidence for the deteriorating conditions in the inland areas that were devastated by a severe food shortage. The tablet bears witness to a staggering increase in grain prices in the ‘year of hardship/famine’.
