On the tenth day of the fifth month, Madame Wang retrieves Snow Flower and Lily to take them to the Temple of Gupo Fair in Shexia. While there, the girls signed their laotong contracts making promises that they swore they would never break. It was also the first time the girls ate chicken and the infamous taro dish at the old man's stall, a tradition that would continue every time they visited the temple again. It was the first night that Snow Flower would spend in Lily's household, she would visit every few months in the next three years.
