Description:
By the summer of 1776, the Continental Congress appointed a committee to develop a Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson, a Virginia lawyer, was chosen to prepare the final draft. The document declared "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness" to be rights that can never be taken away. Thomas Jefferson also provided a list of violations committed by the king, and the American colonies declared independence. On July 2, delegates voted that the colonies were free, and on July 4th, they adopted the Declaration of Independence.
