may 14, 1607 - Jamestown is Founded

Description:

Jamestown was the first English settlement in North America. A group of about 100 members founded it on the banks of the James River. Within the first two years, Jamestown was on the brink of failure. Disease, conflict with Native American tribes, and famine were some causes of failure before a new group of supplies and settlers arrived in 1610. Tobacco was the first profitable export and soon during the 1620s Jamestown was expanding to a new town to the east. Jamestown was the capital of Virginia until 1699.
