12 h, jan 1, 1854 y - Kansas-Nebraska Act
Description:
The Kansas-Nebraska Act authorized popular sovereignty, allowing settlers to decide whether a new state would be a slave state or free. This idea went against the boundaries set in the Missouri Compromise, thus leading to the idea of making the land both Kansas and Nebraska. Border ruffians began entering Kansas illegally trying to sway the vote towards pro-slavery which ended up leading to "Bleeding Kansas," a time when the North and South continued to disagree with each other breaking out into many small wars between the union over Kansas.
