2h 22min, may 28, 1828 y - Tariff of Abominations
Description:
Although tariffs increased the price of goods in America, the North was pleased with the Tariff of 1828 because it helped protect their manufacturing industry. On the other hand, Southerners, who did not have a large manufacturing industry, criticized the tariff for its high rates and even referred to it as the “Tariff of Abominations.” Southerners, specifically South Carolinians, believed that this tariff was discriminatory and they expressed these grievances through protests. For instance, South Carolinians expressed their anger in a pamphlet, The South Carolina Exposition, which suggested the nullification of the tariff and led to defiance.
