11h 57min, jan 1, 1820 y - Missouri Compromise

Description:

Henry Clay helped to form the Missouri Compromise which maintained the free state and slave state balance by admitting Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. Additionally, the Missouri Compromise established the 36° 30’ line which stated that free states are above the line and slave states are below the line, with Missouri as an exception. The compromise was successful for many years; however, the North and the South both began to criticize the compromise and tensions increased. Eventually, Southerners were displeased because it allowed the Congress to establish laws that did not support slavery and Northerners were irritated that the compromise did not prohibit the expansion of slavery.
