jan 1, 1955 - 26th of July Movement
Description:
Revolutionary movement led by Fidel Castro to overthrow the Fulgencio Batista regime in Cuba. Fidel Castro, with a guerilla army and the help of other political activists, went to overthrow the regime. The goal of the overthrow was to reform the government to redistribute land to the poor, nationalize public services, industrialize, hold honest elections, and ensure the mass education of Cuban citizens. Prior to the previous president Batista, in the year of his second election, with suspicions of him stepping down, he organized a coup d’etat and sided with wealthy Cubans and Americans, and incited the death of political opponents. The United States, seeing Cuba as an ally, attempted to overthrow the Cuban Revolution and Fidel Castro, though their attempts failed and socialist policies began to be implemented.
Change: This shows that the United States can not influence Cuba as it once could, specifically after the Spanish-American War, and this shows a shift and decline of their influence especially in Cuba, which becomes an ally of the Soviet Union in the Cold War.
