jun 18, 1954 - Operation PBSUCCESS
Description:
Eisenhower, and involved the United States CIA (Central Intelligence Agency), in the Guatemalan coup d'état (or violent overthrow). The CIA overthrew the democratically elected Jacobo Árbenz, ended the Guatemalan Revolution, and put in Carlos Castillo Armas. The United States profited off the corruption of the previous Guatemalan dictator, Jorge Ubico, as the United Fruit Company (UFC, a banana company). Especially significant, are the deaths of thousands of indigenous people for agricultural land based on the agreement of the UFC (rebranded to Chiquita) and the United States.
Continuity & Change: For the past few years, the United States has involved itself in overpowering other countries as seen in the Spanish-American war where they attained the Philippines, as well as, a period of imperialism. This is nothing unlike the episode in the Philippines and exposes the United State’s tract of imposing itself in smaller countries. This marks the continuation of the fight against communism, specifically seen in the motivations for World War II and the Red Scare. With this, we see that there are ulterior motives when it comes to the overthrow of communism. This also reflects that the United States’ growing global powers can become exploitative by using the past rallying concept of “democracy.”
