Christopher Columbus, born in Genoa, Italy in 1451, was obsessed with idea of a sailing route to India across the Atlantic. People at the time did think the world was round, but greatly miscalculated its size, expecting India to be where the Americas are. After being rejected by many, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain finally funded his voyage in early 1492. A two month journey later, the three ships spotted land on October 12, 1492. They assumed it to be India, but it was mostly likely the Bahamas.Added to timeline:
